Beach Lifeguard Award

A Water Safety Ireland accredited Beach Lifeguard qualification.

 

Introduction

The National Beach Lifeguard Award is a Water Safety Ireland (WSI) accredited qualification. Cork Lifeguard Academy provides this extensive course to teach you life-long skills and qualify you to work as a Beach Lifeguard. This is an internationally recognised Lifeguard qualification.

The objectives of the Award are to train and assess for competencies in:
  • Fitness, knowledge, judgement, and self-discipline.
  • The ability to observe and patrol a beach area.
  • Abilities to perform rescues and work as a team member.
  • To deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner.

Prerequisites

Prior to the commencement of training for your Award, Cork Lifeguard Academy requires that every candidate must be:
Capable of swimming 400 metres (16 lengths of 25m pool) in under 8 minutes. This is a pass or fail Test Item.
A minimum age of 16 years old by date of examination.
Confident in the open water.

(Note: Prior learning and training, such as Rescue 2 and Basic Life Support 3 or equivalent, are recommended but not compulsory.)

 

Equipment

To participate in our Beach Lifeguard Award course every candidate will need the following:
  • WSI Beach Lifeguard Award & First Aid manuals [all provided by Cork Lifeguard Academy].
  • Food and water for every BLS, Pool & Open-water Practical session and the exams.
  • Bathing suit, goggles, towel, etc for every BLS, Pool & Open-water Practical session and the exams.
  • Loose, comfortable clothing for practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing, and lifting.
  • Pen & paper and comfortable sports clothes for every BLS session and the exam.
  • CPR Mask for every BLS session and the exam [provided by Cork Lifeguard Academy].
  • Wetsuit, preferably 5/3 mm winter suit, for every Open-water Practical session and the exam.
  • Outdoor robe, high-vis rash vest and silicone swim hat for  every Open-water Practical session and the exam [all provided by Cork Lifeguard Academy].
  • Strong whistle for every for every Open-water Practical session and the exam.
  • Swim Fins for every Pool & Open-water Practical session and the exams.
